My buddy has a 04 outty 400 and while he was doing his annual winter storage he started to loosen his oil plug and noticed it starting to get tight again so he proceeded and when he went to put it back in the threads in the case were stripped, the dealer said new cases are around $1300.00 plus around 15 to 20 hours labor. The dealer also said you can split the cases and drill out the plug hole and tap it one size larger but the cases don't have a gasket in between what bomb uses in a lock tight to seal the cases together so they have to be dry and free of any oil which will be hard to do cause of the other case having a continuing drip or seep of oil. Does anybody have any other ideas? any help would be greatly appreciated. Bomb wont cover it under his warr. saying he could have crossed threaded it on the prior oil change. Which he never did, but I can understand there point.

There is a rubber drain plug with a tapped center hole and a smaller removable drain plug on the market just for stripped out drain plugs. It's a permanent fix that won't leak.

I think there's one in the J.C. Whitney catalog.  The rubber sleeve expands and seals the hole when the drain plug is screwed in.

Also do a Google search for "stripped oil pan drains", and phrase it a couple different ways. :2cent:

Excerpt: But of course, life isn't easy. The threads in the pan and on the plug are damaged, perhaps from partial cross-threading. What to do now? Forget the drain plug and get a repair kit. A typical kit has a replacement fitting that cuts deeper threads, and when tightened, it seals against a washer and remains in place. Some kits cut fresh, deeper threads for a new plug. A hexhead brass cap with an O-ring seal threads onto the end. When it's time to change the oil, you unthread the cap. Others (for odd-size, severely damaged holes) are fat, cone-shaped synthetic rubber plugs larger than the drain-plug hole. You force a special rod into an opening in the cone, which temporarily stretches it and reduces its diameter, allowing it to fit in the hole. Withdraw the rod, and the cone relaxes and seals the hole--the cone won't come out until you force in that rod to stretch it.

That's a really tough situation. He could try going to another dealer and see if he can get the work to be covered under warranty. This is one of those scenerio's where the dealer can really mess with you if they don't want to cover it under warranty. It would be pretty tough to say that it is anything done by the dealer for by BRP since it would have been noticed earlier.

When ever any major warr. work needs to be done on any bomb product the mechanic has to call a bomb tech and see if they will cover it, plus he did try another dealer they also notified the bomb tech and he was given the same answer.

My friend got it fixed, he went to a auto parts store and bought a self tapping plug one size bigger, so far no leaks. He put his plow on and actually got to use it on Friday we got about two inches, now at this time of the nite its raining and no more snow on the ground.

Glad to hear it's fixed. The only concern I would have is whether or not the thread cutting plug pushes any metal shavings up into the crankcase
