I swamped my bike on may long weekend (upside down running ) we winched out of water drained air box had to pull plugs( hydro locked) kinda ugly doin this in the bush

cranked water out and she fired right up checked oil and it was coffee with double cream colour !

towed bike back to camp.:pu:

anyway after draining oil  plug pulled threads out of the crank case on the way out so after a beer engineering session a 3/8 in npt pipe tap will start inthe hole coat the flute of the tap with grease tap a little at a time  cleaning chips out of flutes as u go and a small hook to pull leftovers out out hole in case go SLOW

IMPORTANT to check depth with the 3/8 plug u r gonna use DONT tap too deep

i like the ones with the allen hex drive

i did this wth the bike propped up on rear . we had no grease so we stole sum from a guys freashly greased tie rod on his truck

if u look in the hole u can see that they have a drain channel milled toward the drain hole and there is only about 2 threads in this spot sooo it can be easy to x thread it if u a doing this in rush standing in your head too lazy to lift bike use a catch pan and a bit to full from dinner to bend down /or one beer too many /let your kid do it and  mess it up I SWEAR !!

oh yea coat thread of new plug with your favorite sealant  and your good to go.dont over tighten it NPT is a taperd thread !too tight and u might CRAK the case :)

Glad it worked out for you in the end.

Bad design IMO, there should be a helicoil insert in there.
