An off-highway vehicle and snowmobile recreational trail
that would connect the Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle
Recreation Area (IROHVRA) with the City of Biwabik is
planned under a Grant-in-Aid proposal submitted by the City
of Hoyt Lakes. If approved, grant funds would be used to
construct and maintain the trail, which would be developed
mostly over an existing snowmobile trail on lands owned by
the City of Biwabik and Mn/DOT TH135 right of way. The
trail would be open to snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles
and off-highway motorcycles. The snowmobile portion of the
trail was developed in 2003 and opened last winter. The
current proposal is to use grant funds to improve the trail
for OHV use and snowmobile trail maintenance.

For details on the proposal use this link:

Folks this trail is 4 miles from here. It is an important trail to have designated ATV. This will be our first LEGAL ATV trail in the area!

Please send your positive emails....Thank you very much!

Here is a copy of my email sent:

  Mr. Kelling
Hello, I would just like to say that I live in Aurora, just a few miles from the proposed Moose Trail. Opening this trail to ATVs would be a great asset to our little communities on the east range. Tying into the Gilbert park would bring more revenue to Biwabik and eventually (hopefully) Aurora and Hoyt Lakes.

I have talked with several out of town ATVers that rode the Gilbert Park but wanted more to do when coming up from the twin cities etc. This trail would give them additional riding trails and in turn they would spend money in our communities.

I am the president of the Aurora Wheelers ATV club and I know first hand that we also need a place to ride. Not everyone has a truck or trailer to get to the Gilbert facility.

Thanks for your time.
Don Driscoll

Thanks for the heads up on the trail. I dropped him an email. Hopefully there will be enough support. That trail would be great. Then hopefully they would keep it going farther East.

I sent in my email to him and explained that we ( my wife and I ) spend a lot of money up north just to go ride on the ATV trails and that this trail would bring in nice revenue to the area and some of it will be ours:sm:

Then thanked him in advance for the new opportunity

Thanks guys. I know every email or phone call helps. I'm curious where the negative comments are coming form. This land is owned by the City of Biwabik, The Ranger ATV club and the rest is hwy right of way(I think). Biwabik has given a thumbs up on it. All I can figure is that the trail comes close to the biking / walking trail and those granola munchers don' t like it.

Yup, I'm sure that's where it's coming from. You can never get everyone to agree on things like that. We should just pack them all up and put them on a deserted island.

Today is the deadline for comments. All we can do now is wait and hope for the best. I'm sure once it gets past the DNR, then the enviros will step in. I know there is one small creek and a swampy area on the trail.

Just wondering what the current status is for this Trail from Biwabik to Gilbert?
I rode it last winter on the sled but didn't notice any signage that said it was open to wheelers. Is it?

According to The Ranger Snowmobile/ATV club, they are going to be doing it in the near future. There is a lot of wetland areas on that trail. They finished filling the swamp area of the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes trail this summer and designated it ATV legal. It took a long time for the studies and permits. Plus a lot of $$$$$. i rode that trail a couple years back after it froze. It will be a nice shortcut to Gilbert but for now, we take the old grade through McKinley

Any news on this trail? I own property on the east side of the ORV Park and have not seen any work done except for the snowmoble trail. Any thing happening with the new park near Virginia?

Welcome to the forum KeystoneLight. As far as I know the trail is stopped because of the swamps that are considered holy land by the tree huggers. I haven't heard a word about the Virginia park in over a year......

East Range trail work advancing

By CHARLES RAMSAY
Regional Editor
Published: Tuesday, April 8, 2008 11:23 PM CDT
DULUTH — Summer 2008 is shaping up as a busy time for building trails on the East Range for a snowmobile-all terrain vehicle route, and for the Mesabi Trail as well.

The Ranger Snowmobile/ATV Club received a recreational trail easement from the St. Louis County Board Tuesday across state-tax forfeit land the county administers, for a grant-in-aid recreational trail that is expected to connect with the state off-highway vehicle park near Gilbert, and a trail connecting Gilbert to Eveleth and other trails.

The Mesabi Trail project also will be paving about 10 miles of trail on the East Range, and starting on plans to go to Embarrass.  The Ranger club will be paying $1,990 in fees to the county for costs. But another situation is getting the approval of a small-portion owner for the easement, said member Duane “Dewey” Rudolph of Fayal Township. He sent a registered letter to the part-owner, and said he may have to send another one.The club is looking to extend a newer dirt trail from the vicinity of the old Lake Mine west of Aurora along the east side of County Road 138 up to the Giants Ridge resort and over to Biwabik and to the OHV park outside Gilbert, to avoid being too close to the nonmotorized Mesabi Trail. Some earthmoving work, as well as grading, is expected to be performed by club volunteers. Once work is done, it will be inspected by state officials for approval in the state’s grant-in-aid trail system.

Rudolph said that the newer trail will be for multi-use enjoyment, from horseback riders to mountain bikers, all-terrain vehicle riders and snowmobilers. It won’t be open to four-wheel-drive trucks for now, he added.

“It’s going to be a great asset to those communities on the Range,’’ Rudolph added.

Mesabi Trail director Bob Manzoline said Tuesday that they work with the Rangers Snowmobile/ATV Club and other groups regularly, and have worked on portions of trails near to each other. Some cooperation may occur on several graded crossings, where motorized vehicles may cross the Mesabi Trail.

“They’re all connected by snowmobile trails,’’ on the East Range, he added.

Work on the trail this summer includes 13 miles of paving being put down, from three miles in Itasca County (Scenic Road 7 to Marble); four miles, from McKinley to Biwabik; and six miles, from Giants Ridge over the Laurentian Divide toward Hwy. 135. Planning will proceed for the next segment, from there to Lamppa’s Corners in Embarrass.

The goal of the snowmobile-ATV trail is part of an overall plan for building some destination trails, Commissioner Keith Nelson of Fayal Township said. There are future trail hookups possible along Forest Highway 11 to Two Harbors, and to the Cloquet Valley trail system, which comes up toward Aurora.

The new East Range trail can “open up any number of possibilities for connectivity,’’ he said.

The St. Louis County Board Tuesday also approved:

A contract with Ecumen Services Inc. for management services for county-owned Chris Jensen nursing home at $25,000 a month; and a charitable gambling license application for Confidence Learning Center to operate pulltabs out of the Hwy. 5 Bar & Grill near Hibbing.

As the Committee of the Whole, commissioners gave preliminary approval to: Road crack sealing work, around the county, for $249,759, to Premier Companies of Duluth; grant agreements with federal housing entitlement funds, for HOME investment partnerships, emergency shelter grants and community development block grants for $3.1 million; participation in a mobile and field reporting project; and plat approval for the Moccasin Point Shores plat on Lake Vermilion.
