Possibly coming up to the OHV park on friday. Just curious if there is any trail riding around the area other than the park. In other words, can you ATV into Gilbert, Eveleth or Virginia for a bite to eat. this will be my first time up there. Not too familiar with the area. If the trip pans out we will then be going to Reddot/Mooserun on Sat. Was on Reddot trail earlier this year. Mooserun was still closed. Just wondering if there more to the trail system than the maps show. Such as forest roads. Also how does the new law passed back in Aug affect eveything??? I know what the law states, I just don't somebody getting mad at us.

eiger0304 welcome! From the Gilbert park you can legally ride the trail into town and the city of gilbert has a designated route to the business area. There is a diner there and several bars on the route, As far as riding "legal" trails to other towns, let me put it like this: we ride from aurora to gilbert. Very little of this is designated ATV but everyone rides there. Across the highway from the park you can get on some old mine trails, follow east, will hook up to old railroad grades near McKinley, follow to Biwabik and then the snowmobile trail to Aurora. I won't recommend against riding this route but will tell you we have a new DNR officer in the area. So rider beware.

Thanks for the info. One more question for you. What is the quickest way from Gilbert back to Gooseberry falls? Staying at a buddies cabin Fri night. It's about 4 miles south of Gooseberry right on hwy 61. Or about 9 miles from Two Harbors.

I grew up in Two Harbors. Your looking at about 80 miles to Gooseberry. From Gilbert take 135 to Aurora. Right at stop sign then go south to the Holday station and turn left. Follow this through Hoyt Lakes and continue on Forest Hwy 11. Can't remember the miles but guessing about 20-30 or so until you see the exit sign for Two Harbors. That will be Hwy 2 and brings you right into Two Harbors. Gooseberry is about 13 miles northeast from there. Have a safe and fun trip....maybe see you on the trails Last edited on Thu Sep 15th, 2005 07:11 pm by outlandish ____________________ ![]() |

Bad day at the ATV park. Got about 1/2 hr in then all the trouble started. Went over to Brian,s Hill and climb right up on the 03 Eiger. My uncle then tried to climb it, got almost to the top, hit a rock and flipped his 660 Griz right over on top of himself. He got bang up pretty bad. After digging his wheeler out of the trees and brushing himself off we continued on. We drove around the park. Being first timers we just want to explore. Then we found the crater crawl. there is a spot where you go down about a 20', hill go left about 50', then backup a rocky slope. Going nice and slow I crawled right up. Uncle started going up, and well you guessed it, almost to the top and hit a rock and over we go again. This time we didn't fairso well. Ended up in the Virginia hospital with a broken thumb. Nice hospital with a great staff. In and out in about an 1hr 15mn. After all said and done 505 miles on the truck, 9 miles on the wheelers. Stayed over night in Two Harbors and then headed home Sat morning. Thankfully we were wearing helmets. I am suprised that helmets are not manditory. We seen about 10 other ATVs in the park. We were the only one with helmets.

Glad to hear no one was seriously hurt. Were these "black diamond" trails? Is your uncle experienced at riding hills? I know there is some serious $hit at the park. My first ride there I was climbing a black diamond hill. It was at least 150' and very steep with no place to get a run at it. I made it OK but the last 10' or so were on the back wheels and I was already kissing the front rack. Some serious pucker there. LOL. Did you happen you check out the mud pits? Sorry to hear you didn't have a good time. Never made it to Silver Bay then? We have a group of about 5 or so headin up there tomrrow.

Yes, the two hills in question were black diamond. He is the one that got me into riding. I've been doing it for about 4 years. He has been riding about 7-8 years. I have been hill climbing with him before, on hills were you must grab onto the front rack. Must have not been his day or something. As far as the mud run, we went down there but did not go through it. In the short time I was there, I did think it was a pretty cool place. Might make it up this weekend again.

I thought about going to it. Do you have info on prices? What kind of a turn out are they expecting? I was thinking it might get pretty crowded. If everyone is at the mudrun it might be a good time to be in Silver Bay.

I think the prices are $10 a day spectators or both days for $15. Mud runs are pulls are $10 each run. There is more info on the link that I posted. It's first year so I don't know how the turnout will be.
