I can't help wondering when I'm watching 4-wheel drive programs on TV if an ATV could go the same places a farly stock Jeep can go. I sent an e-mail to Doug Meyer of "ATV Television" program to ask the question because he is involved in both aspects.
There are a lot of advantages in the ATV being narrower in the tough spots. The only disadvantage would be on deeply rutted Jeep trails where the ATV wouldn't be able to run in the same "ruts". The ATV could put one wheel in the middle and one side on fresh ground outside one of the tracks. On rocks like the Piute Trail in Utah it's all rocky and Jeep track ruts wouldn't exist.
I'm betting you will never see a comparison, head-to-head, because the "four wheelers" don't want to be shown up.
The best ATV with 12" of ground clearance, plenty of power, and the best tires available would embarass a lot of "Jeepers".
