Below is a reply that I received from the DNR. I'm anxious to see what explaination i get back regarding "implications of ATV travel ....." "<......>, The forest road signs which I think you are referring to are brown with white lettering and are only found on United States Forest Service roads within the National Forests. In Minnesota those are the Chippewa and Superior National Forests. According to their sign manual, the horizontal route marker is intended to identify that the travel management strategy is typically "encourage or accept standard passenger cars." The vertical route marker is found on roads which are not maintained for travel by standard passenger cars. As these roads are not DNR roads, I will refer you to a US Forest Service forester at Walker, MN whose name is <.........> He can be contacted at <.........>@fs.fed.us He will be able to explain the implications for ATV travel on Forest Service roads. <.........> Forest Recreation/OHV Program Coordinator DNR - Forestry 1601 Minnesota Drive Brainerd, MN 56401 >>> 9/27/2006 12:41 PM >>> Dear <........>, What is the difference between the MN forest roads that have a horizontal sign and those that are vertical? I thought I read somewhere that one type allows ATV use and the other doesn't. Can you please clarify?

Below is the reply I received from the Forest Service...... Hi <.....>, Thanks for your inquiry, and patience for response. I asked our Forest Staff Officer for assistance and he helped me formalize an explanation. On roads under Forest Service jurisdiciton within the boundaries of the Chippewa NF, the public is presented with roads that have horizontal, vertical, or no road numbers at all. Generally, a horizontal sign represents a (Forest Service) higher standard road (Levels 3-5) which generally would not be open to ATV use due to the "mixed use" with passenger vehicles. We are reviewing our mixed use roads at this time, by District, and hope to have reviewed our District's "mixed use" roads before the heavy snows arrive. The vertical signs are our lower standard roads that are open to OHV use now unless there are signs posting them as "closed" to OHV/ATV use for resource management issues or concerns. Also, by 2008, our Forest will be transitioning to the national Forest Service policy, "that only designated roads will be opend to OHV use and the official map of these designated roads will be available to the public via the internet and FS offices. It has not been determined yet what type, if any, on the ground signing will be installed to identify which roads are open to OHV travel." We're trying to work with DNR and County partners on signing issues as well this Fall. Please feel free to keep in contact, or provide an address to keep up with the process via postal mail. Our Forest website, http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/chippewa, should also have information about our travel managment process.
