From Outlandish in the coffee thread Had a good ride today....just couldn't resist the snowmobile trails (my bad)....beautiful day Shame on you Outlandish I've ridden groomed sno-mo trails in the winter in Wisc. (it's legal on some trails) That is such a blast ! I've also heard that in Idaho, one can by a "pass" to ride a 4-wheeler on selected sno-mo trails. Do you think this is a good idea ? Do you think we could get something like the "pass" idea here in Minnesota ? Do you think the sno-mo clubs would be receptive to this idea ?

Shame on you Outlandish LOL well first the trails haven't been groomed here yet. Not enough snow I guess Yes No, although I bet most ATVers would be willing to shell out the cash Some maybe but not most Reason being, well two that I can think of right now are, 1)They would not want ATVers to slow them down. We would just be slow moving obstacles. 2)They would not risk losing their easements because of irate landowners not wanting ATVs on their property Right now I would be happy to see the opening of some of these to us in the summer. A local club is trying to open up a couple sections here to muti use but man the opposition is tough The North Shore Trail is a dream to me...That would be a killer ride, but stopped in the courts again

I think the other problem would be the snowmobilers bitching because atvs rutted up the trail and wrecking the nice groomed trail. But if they had to by a pass that would help the grooming costs I would'nt care, but I know alot of people would.

If the trails have a good hard base, ATVs really don't rut them under normail riding...but there is always someone who just has to be an a$$hole that will rip them up. A sad fact here, I used to blame all the renegade ATV riding and property damage on the "kids" but have seen first hand that a lot of these "kids", at least around here are adults in their 20's and 30's

I had the opportunity to ride with a fellow a couple times who seemed bent on destruction...and usually in places where it would be visiable by those with descerning eyes. After several attempts of talking to him about it and not gettin thru, he doesn't get invited along for rides anymore. ....Some people really do need a tube-o-four smacked upside the base of their skull !!! I initially posted this sno-mo trail riding question because I see the permit question (4 wheelers on the trail) as having some merit. And I still think it does. The biggest problem here in Minnesota is that some of the trails go thru private land. I would never want to jepordize those private access trails...the wrath of the sno-mo community would not be a pretty sight. Wondering if there are substantial miles of sno-mo trails in locations not affected by private land easements ? I've not been on a sno-mo during the era of groomed trails. Yeah, I'm that old.....used to drive around on a Johnson Ski-Horse , 15HP motor, 20-1/2" wide cleated tract...slower than snails but could climb anything. What a tank !!! So, I dunno about the sno-mo trails and their where-abouts. Are there some trails that are all or mostly on public lands? Superior Nation, Chippewa National, state or county land ???

I'm sure there are some but not near here. All the state grant in aid trails around here cross private property

I can shed some light on this subject since I get asked this all the time by people who want to ride our clubs snowmobile trail in the summer time. I tell them straight out NO, Mainly because 95 % of our trail runs through a very swampy area with tons of water and a huge floating Bog in the middle of it that is totally unpassable by a wheeler in the summer time, unless you have pontoons and an outboard on it there is no way a wheeler is going to go down it without sinking out of site.2nd almost all of our trail is on Private land and the deal with our easments is only for snowmobile use, no wheeled vehicles alowed at all, with the exception of us going out on our wheelers to do trail work in the spring before the frost is gone and in the Fall after the frost sets in. I for one would not be in favor of a special Pass to allow wheelers on our trail in the winter time, I can say this there would be some major accidents because of it, imagine going down the trail on a sled at 50 mph and coming up on a wheeler going 15-20 mph someone would get hurt for sure.

I can say this there would be some major accidents because of it, imagine going down the trail on a sled at 50 mph and coming up on a wheeler going 15-20 mph someone would get hurt for sure. Imagine an elderly man driving his sled on that trail at 15-20mph or a family out with young ones at 15-20mph...Many times I've come up on slow sledders......That theory just doesn't wash with me. There are environmentally sound solutions to filling in bogs for ATV travel. No go there either. The private land issue I see as a problem if the landowners would not agree to ATV travel. But you know what, they might agree to it. This sounds all to familiar..... I have a question. If these snowmobile/ATV clubs are receiving grant money to lay down trails from both ATV and sled funds, why do we only see new sled trails around here? Or is the gas tax fund a single entity for both the sleds and the ATVs? Either way all we see are sled trails being built in my area my

I agree with outlandish on the slow rider comment, it just does'nt hold water. What about a group stopped on the trail for a break, you should be riding within control of your sled and if you cannot come up on people riding slower than you without wiping them out then you are not in control. Wisconsin has duel purpose trails in winter and I have not heard of anyone getting tagged by a faster sled.

I am not saying that we ride out of control but if you have ever been out on our trail you would understand what I was talking about, just how the trail winds and twists thru the woods, I have almost been hit by sleds when I was out there woking on the trail on my wheeler because they didn't see me until they made the corner, The sections in the swamp, there is no way anyone could fill it in enough to get a wheeler thru it, I am talking about a Bog that is in the area of 20-150 feet deep, It is out by U-Tac and they sunk a Cat in there about 15 years ago and it is still there with 150 feet of cable tied to the back of it under the surface of the swamp. The biggest issue is defianately the private land and the easements we got do not allow ATV travel anytime during the year, I would be all for it if it wasn't for the fact that the swamp area is uncrossable unless it is frozen.

Well in the case of the bottomless pit, you have a good valid point.

I am all for trails being multi use when they can be, I like wheeling as much as riding my sled so that wouldn't bother me one bit if there were some trails that could be used by both in there perspective seasons. I will let ya know this spring and come over for a spin that direction, I know a lot of the snowmo- trails that way but not sure where it is legal to ride wheeler on trails up here on the range without getting into trouble. I know quite a few people from the range area since I have lived here all my life, I was also at some of the meetings for the MUD RUN at the OHV park, and helped some where I could. Darci and her husband are members of our sno-mo club also . Back in about 1988 or so I used to ride from my door in Forbes to Hoyt Lakes and all the way over to Grand Rapids without touching a paved or gravel road except for crossing it to get to the other side. all on old mine trails and roads, there are many areas to ride in up here but may be trespassing and not know it sometimes.
