New at this atv riding but have been riding motorcycles a long time. I have always liked exploring the back roads of Wi. Noticed they have a lot of trails sort of close to the Twin Cities. A lot of them are shared with motorcycles. Is that a big deal or am I going to get blown off the trail by some kid on a YZ at every turn? Overall I guess  I'm just looking for new places to explore that will make a nice ride. Thanks for your thoughts.

Don

I ride the Webb Lake - Danbury area all the time there are hundreds of miles of trails in that area and I would recommend you ride them. The Gandy Dancer that starts in Danbury goes all the way to Superior and you can ride the loops in Minnesota from that trail as well as the off shoots in Wisc. You could damn near ride all the way from Danbury to Michigan without having to trailer if you wanted to. Just remember that there is a Wisconsin atv trail sticker that you need to have on your atv. If you need more info on wisc. trails go to http://www.watva.com and go into those forums and someone can answer ?'s on trails in the other parts of the state, or keep asking here and we'll do the best we can.:thumb2:

GOTOYS; Theres another trail system in Wi. thats close to the T.C. area in Osseo Wi. about 15 to 20 miles south of Eau Claire Wi., they have four counties of trails some allow motorcycles but most don't, they also have some trails that you share with horses(not many though they also have there own trails that atvs are not allowed on). Some of the trails have fenced in play areas with mud pits and small obstacles to tackle and moto cross tracks(for some of us loners on sport atvs like me) They also have a lot of atv friendly campgrounds right on the trail system. Theres also plenty of gas stops and food/beverage stops on the trails. If you like riding in the winter they have some trails that are dual purpose that you share with snowmobiles if the temp is 32 degrees or lower. Have fun Wi. has a lot of trails and the people are very atv friendly.

Have ridden in Price county at Park Falls, great trails. Here is info from the newsletter I get:

ATV TRAILS:
As of 11/10/05, all ATV trails are open. Conditions are mainly dry with some puddles.  The TUSCOBIA and FLAMBEAU RIVER STATE FOREST trails CLOSE TO ATVS NOVEMBER 15.  Also, on the FLAMBEAU RIVER STATE FOREST ATV TRAIL there is a washout at BEAR CREEK ROAD AT HACKET CREEK. Use caution.  There may be other washouts as well. Also, improvements were recently made to the Flambeau River State Forest Trail from Hwy. W north to Mason Creek. Please use caution and watch for heavy equipment as the project is being finished up. Make sure you make eye contact with equipment operators to ensure they are aware of you before approaching. Logging is now taking place along the trail from Hwy. W south to Conners Creek Bridge to prepare the way for construction there as well.  Please follow trails and routes, obey the laws, do not speed, and never drink and ride. Failure to do so may cause trail closings. Please tread lightly on all trails. Children under 12 are required to wear a helmet at all times while riding on areas open to public use. Children at least age 12 but under age18 are required to wear a helmet when riding on areas open to public use except when traveling for the purpose of hunting or fishing. Please protect yourself and young riders.

The 62-mile TUSCOBIA STATE TRAIL is open to ATVs April 15 thru November 15

The 60-mile FLAMBEAU TRAIL SYSTEM is open to ATVs May 1 thru March 14.

The 38-mile FLAMBEAU RIVER STATE FOREST TRAIL is open to ATVs May 15 thru November 15

The 26.2 mile PINE LINE TRAIL is open to ATVs during the snowmobile season December 2 thru March 31

ATV  Regulations – Click here for Wisconsin ATV regulation information.

ATV  Registration – To ride on Wisconsin ATV trails, all ATVs must be registered.  If your ATV is registered in a state other than Wisconsin, you must purchase an ATV Trail Pass.

ATV Trail Pass - New legislation has passed that requires All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s) that display an out-of-state registration to also display a Wisconsin ATV Trail Pass in order to operate on a public ATV trail in Wisconsin.

ATV Registration Renewals - Individuals wishing to renew their ATV registrations are encouraged to do so by going online to the DNR website,
http://www.atv.wisconsin.gov.

For more information on ATVing in Price County, visit our website at

Don't forget WI has a 48" maximum width requirement. No aftermarket wheels, in other words.  And wardens are checking for 96db sound levels. And no bigger than 12" wheels.  And no "concealed carry" of a handgun (thanks to our crooked Governor Doyle).  And ATVs must be under 900lbs.

Last but not least, I think there's a 25mph speed limit on all DNR maintained public trails.

Have fun...

Seriously, do they actually measure your bike? With so many machines wearing aftermarket wheels, it just seems like a good way to lose tourism dollars.

Do you really think they would write you up if you had the new 14" wheels? Maybe you WI residents should start firing off emails to your state reps.

BTW MN has some dandy laws too. ATVs must be UNDER 800cc's, (hmmm wonder how mine got registered then) and snorkels are only legal in a DNR ATV park.......thats 2 that I can think of that are stupid.........

I've personally never seen it happen, but I wrote the DNR and they replied the 48" rule was for everyone's safe usage of "two-way trails" and it would (supposed to be?) enforced.

I know the "Trail Captains" (I think they're called) (ATV club members that take a special advanced course in safety, first aid, etc, and they get a jacket patch or something) are doing courtesy Db checks at some of the trail heads, I would suspect only on weekends. During the week I can't imagine many (any) Wardens worrying about ATVs.  Most of their time is spent on boating and fishing enforcement, outside of deer hunting season.

The 12" law was written BEFORE they had 14" wheels on the market. I think I'll put some time in on that one. Not that I want 14's but because it's an outdated law.  Whether a citation is given, in all cases, depends on the mood of the Warden.  And WI is extremely short of Wardens since most of them have retired or will shortly. There was a news item that they had like 15 openings for a 11 month  training course.

There's also a "low pressure, low impact tires only" rule. Anybody know what the PSI is with 14" wheels??

Has anyone spent any time on the trails near Iron River or Bayfield?

I have not rode the ATV there but I did spend a weekend on the sleds around there, I liked the area. Muddy Chick over at WATVA stayed at Valhalla (sp?) Lodge rode the trails and did a little reveiw with some pictures. She seemed to like them quite a bit.

Outlandish; My wife and I have put a lot of miles on in that area, what would you like to know? We also do a lot of snowmobiling there, they do have dual purpose trails there in the winter if the temp is 30 degrees or lower. Summer trails are sandy when you get twords Valhalla it gets rocky and hilly, the trail out of Iron River is a old rail grade(Tri-County Corridor) that goes to Superior Wi. and east to Ashland theres a place on this trail that is a must stop in Moquah thats called by locals the" Plywood Palace" the bar is made out of about 30 sheets of plywood and the bar is old counter tops from houses, in the winter theres almost as much snow inside as out. Theres a lot of trails that spur of this main corridor.

When I go back to my parents place in WI (just east of Eau Claire) I almost always get in a few miles. I've only had my Kawi for a few months but I've put on plenty of miles. We generally go east of Eau Claire on Hwy 12 to Augusta, then north on Hwy 27 to County Rd GG, east on GG until you cross the river and the ATV parking area is on the left. From that lot its about 24 miles to Rock Dam (nice campground, lake, couple of bar/restaurants and gas). From Rock Dam you can shoot down to Fairchild (more of the same) or over to Neillsville, down to Black River Falls (passing the Bunkhouse ATV campground) or over to Osseo. Eau Claire is about 2 hours from the Cities (depending on where your at, it's 2 exactly for me in Zimmerman so everyone else is probably more like a 1 to 1-1/2) and its another 1/2 hour to get to a trail lot from town, be it Osseo, Augusta or Mondovi. Plenty of fun riding to be had with "play areas" nicely marked along the way. So many trails and so little time. Have fun on them if you go, I know I sure do!

:wel:gegger;  Ive done a lot of summer riding in that area but no winter riding. Go to Clark County Wi. web site they might be able to help you. Theres a place in Osseo Wi. to stay its called 10/7 motel they have trail access and cheep, last time I stayed there I believe it was only $25.00/nite nice clean rooms with gas/food with in walking distance. Trails are easy few hills but mostly flat, theres plenty of gas/bars/restaurant's on the trails also, people are very atv friendly you would have a good time. Nielsville is in Clark Co.
