We rode some legal trails in central Michigan last weekend (Irons area), and although we did not have any issues, some other ATVer's up there were not so lucky.

Along this trail we were on, there are a couple of water holes (truly water, no real mud). These water holes butt directly next to the "legal / groomed trail". This group of 6-7 ATVer's were in front of us (about 200'), when all of a sudden 2 dark green Polaris Sportsmans pulled out in front of and behind this group. The Polaris ATV's were nearly blocking the entire trail.

As we progressed closer, we noticed that the 2 Polaris riders had dark brown shirts & jackets on - they were the local "Barney's" (cops). They had 2 Polaris Sportsman, dark green in color, with 2 - 2" tall stickers on the gas tank which said "Sheriff". Some how the local police were able to snag $$ and purchase ATV's for ORV law enforcement (we get no new trails, but they probably were able to receive ORV funds to purchase their ATVs).

The lead rider in that group had apparently started to pull off the trail to enjoy the little water hole - NO such luck !! The cops were waiting somewhere in the woods right by that water hole. I did not see their exact location, but they definately waisted no time in blocking the entire group in.

The police allowed us to pass, after first stopping next to them (checking for ORV stickers).

It truly sucks that we have dropped to this level of law enforcement : go to one of the few restricted legal ORV trail systems, then hide in the woods, waiting for the slightest infraction of MI ORV law. Mean while, people are dealing drugs in Detriot.... very disappointing. I hate to even say it, but I think this is a sign of things to come.......not just in Michigan.

Best of luck guys.
