I am curious, my wife and I both love it up north in the boundry water area and all along the north shore. We both check the Ely  and Grand Marais live cams daily. For some time now we have been looking on the internet at job sites and such, but to tell the truth, the Minnesota job site is pretty confusing and pretty much just seems to deal with the major cities. I am sure that I probably  missed something, but are jobs really that scarce up there or is it one of those deals were you have to know the right people or already live there? I live in a nice place now, the house we live in is one year old and its on the mississippi river. I dont want to sound like I am complaining, because my wife and I both feel very fortunate to live where we do. Riverfront property is very scarce if you want to own, everything is leased land but we own some, just happened to be in the right place at the right time. We have awsome neighbors, are 100 foot above the flood plain, and our property values will always go up. We are both proud ofwhat we have here, we lived in a one bedroom cabin on this property for 4 yrs that was just a summer cottage for its whole life, no insulation and heat in only the bedroom and liveingroom,no real foundation and 700 sq foot. Now we live in a house that we put up that is totaly brand new and has heat and air and is 1500 sq foot with a full basement, not to mention my 900 sq foot shop thats heated too. We were married down here also. I tell you this because we have both worked very hard to get were we are today and feel lucky and proud, but we would both give it all up to live up north. All of the good jobs are going away, pay cuts are common etc. My wife lost her job after 14 yrs of service and no reason was given, because Iowa is a right to work state, no reason is needed,Istill work at the same place, but Iam union, and our contract is up in 2yrs, the company has two other non union places in other states, so I look for them to shut the doors come contract time. We both feel a peace up north that we just dont get here, so thats a little of the reason why we want to move up there so bad. I have been trying the mines, but so far no luck, I was just wondering if anybody had any insite on the job situation up there and also cost of liveing? Its a lt to ask, but any input would be appreciated.  Thanks.

An article in the Mesabi Daily news a few weeks back said that the Iron Range mines will be hiring. Something like half of the workforce will be retiring in the next few years. The mines are all union to my knowledge with the exception of Cypress in Silver Bay and Babbitt. Good wages and benefits! The cost of living is pretty good on the iron range. The north shore is a lot higher in housing etc. Ely is a very cool town. We live about 45 miles from there.

There is a new company coming to our town and will be mining in the old LTV Steel mine here. It is a Canadian company called Polymet. Some large area mines are Eveleth Tac and Minn Tac There are others but I can't think right now

United Taconite (formerly Eveleth tac) is currently hiring general labor postitions aswell as some engineering and other specialized jobs. I think you have to go to the Cleveland Cliffs website to apply for it.

I am sure you are already doing this but check out http://www.virginiamn.com That is the Mesabi Daily News but there a links to other local papers.  Also the MN Job Service has a site but I don't really remember what it is.  I was registered with them but the site was in my favorites and when my puter crashed I lost all that and have never went back to it.
