What do you guys use to protect yourself? The only time I think about it is when we stop for a rest and kill the engines. It'd be pretty easy for a bear to unknowingly sneak up on you. I have heard there are lots of grizzlies out where we ride. Should a guy at least have bear spray and if so how effective is it?

I'd rather just take a brake sitting on my idling Outy if in grizzly country, the last thing I want, is to be close enough to use pepper spray. :2cent:

After reading that I had to give my head a shake....You are right, if you are close enough to spray your chances aren't too good.

When in alaska I packed a 44mag ruger redhawk and a Marlin lever gun in 45-70.

And right now the score is Brian 1 - Bear 0. Shoot him in the face with a 45cal solid 400grn several times and he will stop. And you will soil your pants:pu:

People just don't realize what it will take to stop a big bear, "that's on a mission". Also unless your on your quad, you can't outrun a bear.

If I sound uninformed that's because I am. I've never hunted and have not spent much time in the bush. I just want some peace of mind out there.
What are the odds of a bear trying to attack you if you are riding? From what I have been told, the bear will be long gone before you even get close (if they hear you comming). What about if you end up quadding between the mother and her cubs? You would think it would attack...???
The guys who have lived out there their whole live tell me I should not worry about bears, but DO worry about cougars. Same thing though, I can't see a cougar attacking a person on a quad.

Chances are slim that you'll encounter a viscious animal, but the more you are "out there",  the more your chances.

Just be aware of your surroundings and carry a BFG.

if yer in black bear country they will usually be beatin feet away from you but you CAN still see am and up close. like me having that one drop out of a tree yards in front of me and ran up the trail with me hot on his ass lolol

Cougars, yer not as likely to see unless you know what yer looking for. they will tend to lay on rock out cropping and tree limbs above the trails waiting to pounce on dinner, a lot like yer house cat acts only a hell of a lot meaner....  not usually on well travelled trails though... they will be hunting you not the other way around. grizzlies/ brown bears are a different subject ... they are usually top of the food chain in the areas they dwell in and you if accessible might look like a tasty lunch or snack depending on yer size. steer clear of em pretty much at all costs
