Hello Im new to ATVs and im thinking about buying one within the next few months. I was looking at a couple different models (all of them so far are yamahas). I am looking at the Grizzly 350 4x4, Grizzly 400 4x4, BigBear 400 4x4, and the wolverine 350. So far im liking the grizzly 400 the most. But, i dont know if i want to spend too much on my 1st ATV. Does anyone here own any of the ATVs i listed? What ATV would you guys reccomend for a first ATV? I have rode a bayou 220 and it was fast enough for me so im sure a 450 - 400 will be plenty of power for a first ATV.. (i have also rode a grizzly 660 and it was a little too much for me right now)

I hate to admit it,but for a first atv you'd probably be better off with a honda until you're through your destroying stage anyway. They seem to take a beating and keep on ticking, largely because of a lack of newer technology. If it dont have it, you cant break it, which means less down time and more wrecking time. And there is so many around that they dont cost a fortune but still seem to always be sell-able when you're done due to reputation. JMO And the yami's ive had (wolv,kodi,griz660) seem to bend up kinda easy compared to the rHondas (FRAMES,front bumpers, rims, etc).

The few hondas i have looked at so far seemed more expensive than the yamahas. I know this is the wrong section to ask this question but what about the Suzuki Eigers? A couple people have recomended them.

i read somewhere that they were nothing special, but i cant see them being much different than the smaller yami's, but in different clothing. No first hand experience though

Korn, I don't see Honda being "better" than a Yamaha for a first ATV. I don't see why one brand would be better than another for a first quad. More importantly, stay with the size you are talking about (350 to 450) and consider moving-up after a couple years or so of riding- that's basically where I am. I just went from a 500 to a 700. The 500 was plenty for quite a while. The Honda's are a little simpler in that they don't have selectable four wheel drive, they are always 3 wheelin', but I don't see that as too much of an "advantage." Their straight rear axles make for more draggin' and harder riding for the most part. I would probably pick the Grizz. 450. KC

Yea, right now i think anything bigger than a 450 will be too much right now. I have rode a grizzly 660 a little bit and it was a little too much. I think im definately gonna go with a 450. Im really liking the Polaris Sportsman 450 and the grizzly 450. I need to do a little research about both of them. i can find a lot of information about grizzly 660s and 700s but nothing on the 400 or 450s.

The 450 Grizzly (Kodiak was re-vamped I think two years ago. They went to independent rear suspension (IRS), instead of straight rear axle (SRA). They had great reviews when they came out. I looked at buying one that year, but I held-off. KC

here is something for you to think about .... when I buy something like an ATV... a major purchase.... I always buy the best I can get/afford. the reason is ... if I bought a 350 and it was for play and fun I kno9w it wouldn't take me long being on it till I really wished I had bought something bigger. if ya don't have a lot of Friends with them most likely you will and if they are all on 660s and 700's yer gonna get real tired real fast of them leavin yer butt behind eatin a lot of dust. if the power is scary they do have adjustments on the back of the throttles that will allow you to restrict yer speed till yer ready. the only time I would just get a 350 is 1. if this is something you want and yer dad is gonna get it for ya and you wanna look like its a sane thing to buy or 2 if this is something yer gonna use on a ranch no playin just something to keep track of yer cattle with and you want the better gas mileage or some other similar work type vehicle ... again thats just MNSHO (my not so humble opinion) hee hee

Im definately not getting a 350 orless something happens and i cant afford anything bigger. Im gonna try to get a 450 or a 500. The only problem is i was hoping to get something that will fit in the back of a S10....... I dont think that will happen tho. a 400 would probably fit with the tailgate down but im not sure about a 500. Are Arctic cat ATVs any good? i really like the Arctic Cat 500 4x4 and im pretty sure if i save up enough for a decent down payment then i can afford one.

if yer worried about yer tailgate holding the weight you can always get a piece of plywood and cut it to fit the back of yer truck so it wont slide out LOL and it will help take the weight off the tailgate... AC's are more of a work horse. if yer gonna be packing into some really rough places or working it to death then AC is a good choice. ACs are like pack horses they can trod along carry weight and get you there. they aren't great for racin around cause of that top heavy feel a lot of em have. it just isnt their thing. ATVs like the outtys are more like thoroughbred race horses they would rather you give em the rein. allow em to stretch it out and run n play. think about what yer main uses are going to be for yer ATV. then when you decide on some models to go look at go sit on them in the showrooms for a couple hours. nuttin worse that buying an ATV, then taking it out the first time and find out its uncomfortable as heck you you and you cant stand to sit on it for very long lolol that might narrow yer choices down.

I dont plan on doing much work with an ATV. Im just gonna be riding in a yard and on trails. So i guess im not gonna be getting an arctic cat. Are there any problems with the grizzly 450s or Polaris Sportsman 450s? I would love to get an outlander 400.... but i was thinking that they are probably a little too expensive for me.. How much do outlander 400s and 500s usually sell for? Last edited on Sat Jan 6th, 2007 03:14 pm by Korn |

Whatever choice you make I'm sure you will be happy with it. My first atv was a honda 450 foreman. It was great for the first couple of days, but like people said. I wanted more speed once I got used to it.. It was a great bike though.. I loved it.. They are now 500's and I deffinatly consider it as an option. good luck

MSRP on the 500 is $7,299. Thats a little too much. The 400 is $6,299 Which is still a lot..... but i would probably be able to afford it if i save up a little extra for a better down payment. Im only 17 so im tryong to save up for a pretty big down payment so payments will be pretty cheap. Im gonna try to get 2,000 - 3,000 for a down payment. Does anyone know how much the outlander 400 or 500 would really sell for? or will it be around MSRP? I dont want to pay much more than 6,000 for a first ATV. What kind of breaks do the outlanders have? ![]() They only have the brake thing on one side? Does it control the front and rear brakes at the same time? I have never saw the brakes setup like that. are they any good like that?

YUP the single lever gives you a 60/40 split 60 going to the front works fairly good. there are other bikes that do it too like the AC

Well, the closest Can-Am dealer to me is about 45min. away..... The Yamaha, kawasaki, suzuki, and polaris dealer is about 10min. away. This week me and my dad are gonna go out to the dealer and check some out.

Good luck! Have fun! Make sure you get "out-the-door" pricing from them. Dealers around here like to tell you that they will sell them at MSRP and then tack-on an extra thousand doors in freight and assembly costs. Anyway, just make sure you are comparing apples to apples between dealers, manufacturers & models. KC

Well, i went to look at some ATVs. The yamaha dealer i went to didnt have any big grizzlys. they only had an 80 and 125. So i didnt really get to look at the one i like. I also went to a suzuki, kawasaki, and polaris dealer and they had a lot to look at. I really like most of the suzuki ATVs. But i didnt get to sit on any yet. Does anyone know much about the suzuki vinson 500? I think i know what i want now. I want something thats between 400-500, i want a manual, 4x4, diff lock, and rear suspension doesnt really matter.

4x4 & diff. lock don't matter? Does this mean you want a sport quad? KC

No, i dont want a sport quad. I went to the suzuki deaker last night and actually talked to a salesman. I was looking at the eiger, vinson, and kingquad 450. If i can afford the kingquad then thats the one i really want..... if not then i might just get the eiger. Last edited on Fri Jan 12th, 2007 07:11 pm by Korn |

The kingquad is a 450 with EFI and indepandant rear suspension, The eiger is a 400 with SRA, and the vinson is a 500 with SRA. The kingquad is automatic and the other two you can get in either an automatic or a manual.. Those are the only big differences that I know of. All of them look pretty good and im sure i will be happy with any of them.
